First Baptist Church is pleased to announce the placement of Sharon Parker-Lenihan as our interim Choir Director. A native of Des Moines, Sharon is well known in the area having been a music educator, soloist, and choir director for the past 45 years. She attended Drake University and the University of Southern California. In addition to teaching in the music classroom, Sharon was the voice coach for the DM Children’s Choruses, and is currently the Vocal Coach for the Heartland Youth Choirs, and teaches private voice in her home. Before retiring in 2017, Sharon was the Director of Music and Fine Arts at Plymouth Congregational UCC, and previous director in the Plymouth Children’s Choir Program.
Sharon’s singing accomplishments include soloist with the Des Moines Symphony, the DM Choral Society, the Plymouth Fine Arts Series, and various concerts and events in the area. She was a member of the first apprentice program for the DM Metro Opera Summer Festival.
Serving as Interim Choir Director feels like a full circle to Sharon as her first church employment was in 1971 at First Baptist Church downtown as the choir section leader/soloist under the direction of Marion Hall. She has been singing in, or directing church choirs since she was 10 years old, and is thrilled to return to making a joyful noise at First Baptist.
Sharon will be introduced in Sunday Worship on December 22. Her first rehearsal with the choir will be held on Wednesday, January 8, at 7:30 pm, and her first Sunday will be January 12. Please make her feel welcome at First Baptist!
